Midsummer in Vilhelmina is of course celebrated throughout the municipality, but the Midsummer celebration in Fatmomakke is special and known throughout the country.
Fatmomakke has a Sami church town with great importance as a meeting place. Here, Sami and settlers have met since the 18th century to celebrate, go to church, do business and so on, one thing that makes it unique is that we still do so in 2023.
The church is of course an important place and building, but there is also the Salvation Army's prayer hut donated by Anna-Lisa "Lapp-Lisa" Öst, you know: "child's faith... child's faith, Do you still have your child's faith". Fatmomakke church town is a protected cultural park and although everyone is welcome to the Midsummer celebration (and visit all other days of the year) you should show respect, there are signs and information outside the buildings you can visit, other huts and cottages are not museum objects but privately owned homes used during weekends and holidays.
You can't drive all the way, you should be prepared to walk a couple of hundred meters but it's worth it.
On Midsummer's Eve itself, there is a classic Midsummer celebration where you dress the pole at Stinnebommsbacken, dancing, singing and music. Then the festivities continue until the early hours.
So if you want to celebrate a different Midsummer in Lapland, then come to Vilhelmina
Welcome or Buerie båeteme!
