About the return of the clothes moth and how to avoid moths in your home!
The clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) is a moth that, when it is a larva, attacks textiles and causes holes. For a long time, the clothes moth has been almost eradicated in Sweden, but new habits have meant that the pest has increased in numbers in recent times.
The moth decreased when we started using more synthetic materials and impregnation – but with fewer toxins (which is of course very good) and more natural materials, the risk of moth infestation is increasing again. It is often apartment buildings that are hardest hit by moths, as they easily spread between, for example, different attic storage rooms.
Here's how you can reduce the risk of moth infestation:
1. Do not put away dirty textiles, rugs, jackets, etc. – but wash them before you hang them away.
2. Try not to have too crowded closets and storage rooms.
3. Hang away (washed) winter clothes during the summer and summer clothes during the winter so there aren't so many textiles in the same place.
4. Use natural moth repellent, American red cedar has a fairly strong scent that is appealing to humans, and that you may recognize from various scented candles, incense, or perfumes. It is a warm, pleasant woody scent for most – but absolutely not for the clothes moth!
5. If you can't get rid of the moth, contact a pest controller, also check with your insurance company what your home insurance covers.
