How to clean your oven with soap in four easy steps

Sara Idenfors

You can clean your oven effectively without harsh chemicals by using a fatty, natural soap, preferably in solid form. Fat dissolves fat, and with the help of heat and an ecofiber cloth, the oven becomes sparkling clean, completely without harmful substances.

Here is how to clean your oven step by step:

1. Brush out – Remove loose dirt and food residue with a coarse brush.
2. Apply the soap – Work solid soap mixed with a little water into all the surfaces inside the oven.
3. Heat the oven – Set the oven to 150–180 °C for 20 minutes. You can also place a bowl of water inside to create steam.
4. Let cool – Once the oven has cooled, wipe it out with a damp ecofiber cloth.
5. If necessary: repeat or leave overnight. For especially dirty surfaces, let the soap work for longer before wiping it off.

When it comes to soap, it is much easier to clean the oven with a fatty soap. Fat dissolves fat—the like dissolves like principle. Dirt in the oven is often grease. What is not grease is food residue (from plants or animals). A rule of thumb for natural cleaning is to use something alkaline to remove residue from plants or animals. Västerbottenssåpa is both fatty and alkaline.

Another advantage of solid soap is that it is so firm and thick that you can create a thick foam without it running down the oven’s interior walls and ceiling..

    2. Work the soap into all the oven’s surfaces with a little water. Some ovens have parts that can be removed and cleaned separately.

    3. Turn the oven on to 150–180 degrees for about 20 minutes. For extra effect, place a bowl of water inside. It’s the steam we want! Hot water and soap work well together.

    4. Be careful when you start wiping out the oven! Let the water cool before you start wiping out the oven. Another option is to leave the soap in the oven overnight and continue the next day. Use the Ecofiber cloth when wiping it out, and you’ll see that the dirt comes off much more easily now. Wipe it out with a damp cloth.

If the rack is badly burned, it may need to be wrapped in plastic with soap and water and left that way overnight before being wiped with an Ecofiber cloth and water.

This is what it looks like when it’s finished!

     Questions and answers

    - Why do we recommend using fat-based soap to clean the oven?

Fat-based soap is effective at dissolving grease and other food residues that can become stuck in the oven. Its fat content also makes it alkaline, which is effective for breaking down residues from plants or animals.

    - Why is it important to let the oven heat up with soap and water before you start cleaning it?

By heating the oven and using steam from the hot water, it becomes easier to dissolve stubborn dirt and grease stuck to the oven’s surfaces. This then makes the cleaning process itself easier.

    - Which tools do we recommend for cleaning the oven?

A sturdy, relatively stiff brush, an Ecofiber cloth, water, and solid soap are what we recommend for cleaning the oven! A glass cooktop scraper and a small, coarse scrubbing brush can also be useful for reaching hard-to-access areas.

    - What is the advantage of using an Ecofiber cloth to wipe out the oven?

The Ecofiber cloth is effective for wiping away dirt and grease from the oven while being gentle on the surface. Its absorbent properties allow it to remove dirt with minimal effort.
