Deck maintenance

Decking only gets more beautiful over the years. If you buy, for example, heartwood pine decking, it is beautifully wood-white, and over time it grays. How long it takes depends a bit on weather conditions and the environment, but it usually takes a few months up to a couple of years before it becomes beautifully gray. During that process, some growth from algae may occur under flowerpots or other objects. You can easily fix that by washing with soap and hot water. If you want to treat with soap, you get a silky smooth, velvety surface (the scrub floor principle), if you prefer a darker and glossier surface, you can oil it.

The lifespan of a pressure-treated deck is mainly determined by the quality of the wood and the pressure treatment, less by how you choose to surface treat it. The surface treatment is of greater importance for you, your family, your pets and the immediate environment. How do you want the decking to feel and look, how important is the environmental issue to you, and how important is it to avoid using hazard-classified products?
