In this blog post, we talk about the four basic factors to consider when you are going to clean something. By seeing the cleaning task as a cake with four slices – time, temperature, mechanical cleaning and chemicals – you can adjust each part to find the most effective and gentle cleaning method!
Did you know that there are only 4 things to consider when you are going to clean something?
This applies regardless of whether it is a car to be cleaned of asphalt stains or whether it is the oven or the floor at home that needs to be cleaned.
Think of the task as a cake with four slices. If you make one slice bigger, you can make another smaller. By thinking through your four cake slices, you can often come up with the most gentle and environmentally friendly way.
The first is time
How much time do you have? Can things, for example, be soaked overnight or is there no time for that? Extra time can mean that you can reduce one of these other four parts.
The second is temperature

What temperatures do you have to work with? Warmer water for example or even a heat gun, such a thing can be good if it is glue or paint that you want to remove. A heat gun can then mean that you don't have to use solvents.
The third is mechanical cleaning

How much can / do you want to scrub and with what? Maybe you only want / can wipe the object but maybe it can withstand the use of a stiff scrub brush, a glass hob scraper or a copper scrubber.
The fourth is chemistry
This includes all cleaning agents and everything, absolutely everything affects the globe so here you should think carefully and not use stronger or more chemicals than necessary. Soap and detergent are cleaning agents that contain natural, gentle and biodegradable surfactants. If you increase surfactants or solvents, bleaches and so on, it has consequences. Sometimes you may have to, but the more you can clean in a gentle way, the better.
So, there you go! Here are your four cake slices. Just keep them in the back of your mind and the next time you have to clean, think about which slice can I increase and which slice can I decrease?
Our example with oven trays that are allowed to lie greased with soap and water for one or more days is a good example of how you can let time and a gentle cleaning agent like soap work together instead of resorting to stronger products. Click here to read more about it: How to clean oven trays

Questions and answers
1. What is the advantage of letting time do the work when cleaning?
Allowing cleaning agents and water time to work can reduce the need for stronger chemicals and intense scrubbing, making the process gentler and more environmentally friendly.
2. How can temperature affect the cleaning process?
Higher temperatures, such as hot water or a heat gun, can make it easier to remove dirt and stains, reducing the need for harsh chemicals.
3. Why is mechanical cleaning an important factor to consider?
Mechanical cleaning, such as scrubbing, helps to remove dirt effectively. Choosing the right tools and methods can make cleaning more efficient and gentler on surfaces.
4. What are the benefits of using environmentally friendly cleaning agents?
Environmentally friendly cleaning agents, such as soap and detergent, contain natural and biodegradable surfactants that are gentler on the environment and less harmful to health.
5. How can you balance the four factors to clean in an environmentally friendly way?
By thinking through how much time you have, what temperature you can use, how much you can scrub, and what chemicals you need, you can adjust these factors to find the most effective and environmentally friendly way to clean.
