This applies whether you are cleaning a car to remove tar spots or cleaning the oven or floor at home.

Think of the task as a cake with four slices. If you make one slice larger, you can make another smaller. By thinking through your four cake slices, you can often determine which method is the gentlest and most environmentally friendly.

The first is time

How much time do you have? For example, can things be left to soak overnight, or is there no time for that? Extra time may allow you to reduce one of the other four factors.

The second is temperature

 

 

What temperatures do you have available to work with? Warmer water, for example, or even a heat gun, which can be useful if you want to remove glue or paint. A heat gun can help you avoid using solvents.

The third is mechanical cleaning

 

 

How much can or do you want to scrub, and with what? Perhaps you only want or are able to wipe the object, but maybe it can withstand using a stiff scrubbing brush, a glass cooktop scraper, or a copper scrubber.

The fourth is chemicals

This includes all cleaning products, and everything—absolutely everything—affects the planet. So we should think carefully and not use stronger products or more chemicals than necessary. Soap and liquid soap are cleaning products that contain natural, gentle, and readily biodegradable surfactants. If you increase the amount of surfactants or solvents, bleach, and so on, there are consequences. Sometimes it may be necessary, but the more you can clean in a gentle way, the better.
