How do you prevent surfaces from becoming blotchy?

Streaky surfaces are a common problem when cleaning, whether it involves windows, stovetops, glass tables, or stainless steel appliances. But why do streaks appear—and how can you remove them? The answer varies depending on the material and the dirt, but here we explain the most common causes of streaky surfaces and how to clean them easily for a sparkling result.

Streaky windows—common causes and solutions

 

If we start with windows that can easily become streaky, this is because particles remain on the surface or because something is introduced during cleaning that forms clusters (streaks).

To solve this problem, a surface with a lot of particles on it (such as a window near a road) should first be cleaned with water and a scraper to remove the bulk of the particles (dust/sand). The window can then be polished to a shine with window cleaner.

It is important to use a product with one component that dissolves grime and another that removes clusters and deposits, such as salts. 

Streaky glass surfaces—stovetops, oven glass, and microwaves

Other glass surfaces, such as glass tables, oven glass, microwaves, and stovetops—grease is often the culprit here. 

Here's how:

1. Solve the grease problem with hot water, a cloth, and soap spray.

2. Dry thoroughly and rinse the cloth between drying passes.

3. Then remove the streaks with glass cleaner and a window cloth or a lint-free paper towel.

Stainless steel surfaces – how do you avoid streaks?

A common tip is to dry the surface after cleaning with a little olive oil on a dry cloth —this usually removes the streakiness, but it leaves a greasy surface that some people do not want. 

If you do not want to use the oil trick, we suggest the same method as for cooktops and other glass surfaces described above.

However, we know that there are surfaces—especially somewhat older stainless steel surfaces—that still become streaky. What you can do is take a dry microfiber cloth and apply a little sour filmjölk (plain, as sour as possible) to it, polish the surface with it, and hopefully it will improve! 

Cabinet doors – how to avoid streaks

All cabinet doors except those painted with linseed oil paint can be cleaned with soap spray.

Here's how:

1. Spray onto a soft microfiber cloth, not directly onto the door, and wipe it clean.

2. Wipe the entire door from top to bottom.

3. Change the cloth when necessary.
