How do you wash regular clothes?

Washing everyday clothes properly extends their lifespan and keeps them fresh. Here are some steps to follow:

 

1. Sort the clothes

  • Color: Sort clothes into light, dark, and white piles.
  • Material: Sort clothes by material, such as cotton, synthetics, or wool.
  • Level of soiling: Very dirty clothes should be washed separately from lightly soiled garments.

2. Check the care symbols

Check the care instructions on the clothing labels to find out which temperature and cycle are recommended.

 

3. Choose the right detergent

  • All-purpose detergent works well for most clothes.
  • All-purpose detergent for delicate garments such as wool or silk.
  • Contaminated laundry from, for example, healthcare settings should be washed and handled by a professional.

4. Use the correct temperature; general advice. Always read the care instructions on the garment.

  • 30-40°C for synthetics.
  • 60°C for towels, bed linen, and underwear if they need to be disinfected.
  • Cold wash for delicate materials such as silk or wool; hand washing is recommended.

5. Start the machine

  • Choose a suitable wash cycle depending on the material of the clothes and their level of soiling.
  • Add fabric softener if you wish, but avoid it for materials such as microfiber and sportswear, as it can affect their function. Fabric softener is not needed to make the laundry soft if you use all-purpose detergent. 

6. Dry the clothes

  • Air-drying is gentlest for most clothes.
  • Tumble drying can be used for some garments, but always check the label. Some materials shrink or wear more easily when machine-dried.
