How often is it normal to clean?

Sara Idenfors

Here you will learn how often it is normal to clean your home to keep it clean without stress. Many people wonder about the right cleaning frequency because we have different habits and views of what is clean and dirty.

It is important to find a balance—do not clean so often that it becomes a burden, but not so rarely that it negatively affects hygiene or comfort. Messy does not always mean dirty: for example, toys and children's belongings can be left out without the home being unclean, while an overflowing trash bag or dirty sink are clear signs that it is time to clean.

In families with many people, it can help to have a basket for each person where they can put their belongings when tidying up. This makes it easier for everyone to stay organized and take responsibility.

The longer you wait to clean, the harder it becomes to get started. Here you will find practical tips on how often you should do different cleaning tasks for a clean and healthy home.

Step 1:

Try to make it a rule never to go to bed with dishes in the sink and things on the kitchen counter. Wash all the dishes every day! If you can keep this up, you have already made great progress. Starting the day with an empty sink and a clean kitchen counter is a major advantage.

Step 2:

Sort things, throw away rubbish, and take out the trash. Do this as soon as the trash bag starts to get full, depending of course on how many people there are in the household.

Step 3:

If possible, start a load of laundry as soon as the laundry basket starts to fill up. If there are many people in the household, this may need to be done quite often. Saving up a mountain of laundry only makes things difficult. One load of laundry is not the end of the world to take care of.

Step 4:

Bedding should be changed approximately every 14 days. Towels should be washed every week, but common sense applies here too, and there is a difference between living alone or as a couple and having many people sharing a bathroom.

Step 5:

The toilet and kitchen should be cleaned a little more thoroughly at least once a week. By that, I do not mean that you need to empty all the kitchen cabinets, but the stove, countertops, and cabinet doors can be wiped down once a week. The toilet should also be kept clean, and you should use separate cleaning tools for it. Do not bring cloths, brushes, and bottles from the toilet into the kitchen.

Step 6:

It is reasonable to bring out the vacuum cleaner once a week. But if you have pets or it is the season when gravel gets carried indoors, it will be needed more often.

Step 7:

Dusting, cleaning windows, clearing out cupboards, and other tasks can be done when you have time and notice that they are needed.
