How to treat wooden furniture with Västerbottenssåpa
Simple steps for scrubbing pine furniture with soap
What we did was scrub it with soap – Hard soap, lukewarm water, and a scrubbing brush from IrisHantverk, working up a lather. As you can see, this produces a denser foam rather than light soap bubbles. This is because the soap is superfatting, which is also what replenishes the wood's oils and gives it a pleasant surface.
This chest of drawers is a simple pine chest from IKEA . It was assembled from a flat pack and put into use immediately, without any surface treatment whatsoever. As a result, dirt, makeup, soap, and dust became stuck and soaked into the wood. The surface was also not completely smooth-sanded but slightly rough, which made it quite difficult to wipe clean.
See the first small tilted image – here you can see scratches and marks that could not be wiped off.
The middle image shows the chest of drawers as it looked originally – quite dull.
The result after scrubbing with soap
The last image shows the chest of drawers after scrubbing with soap!
It is a little difficult to see in the picture, but the surface becomes completely different. It does not attract dirt in the same way and is significantly easier to wipe clean. The surface treatment can be repeated several times for better results. Once every six months is often recommended for soap-scrubbed wooden floors, and we believe that is also a suitable recommendation here. It naturally depends on how the furniture is used. This particular piece of furniture is in a bathroom in a family with children and is used daily and frequently. Ointments, skin cream, and toothpaste are stored here, so it is a functional everyday item.
