Is recycling good for the environment?
The answer is YES – recycling is almost always the absolute best for the environment!
The Earth's resources are not endless, and some materials, natural resources, are not recreated! The more of us there are who use these, the more important it becomes to recycle, reuse, and use again and again.
Unfortunately, we are not so good at recycling!
It is actually the case that half of everything we throw away – that ends up in the landfill could instead have been recycled – so we have some work to do!
In this blog, we will go through some simple things that you can easily do to get better at sorting and better at not producing waste!
We do NOT like the trends that say you become happy by "throwing away everything you have" and living a minimalist life. Everything that has been produced has cost both money, environment and energy, so throw away with common sense.
Do not throw away anything that you can reuse, use for something else, or know that you will need at a later time.
That just means that you will need to run out and buy new ones quite soon and that is not good for the environment.
Did you know that aluminum, glass, and steel can be recycled infinitely?
It can be remade, over and over and over again without deteriorating.
Manufacturing things from recycled material always requires less energy than manufacturing new from raw materials.
Ex. making an aluminum can from recycled aluminum requires 95% less energy than making a can from new aluminum.
If you still need to get rid of something, it should be recycled if possible.
Are you unsure how – Google it, the internet is your best friend here.
There is a lot of good information that is easy to find.
Many of us are already good at sorting waste at home. With good containers for e.g., food scraps = compost, plastic, paper and metal, there is not much left that goes to the landfill. That's good! But some of us also have a sad trash can (perhaps the one under the desk at work) where apple cores, plastic, and paper end up in the same bag.
Here we will show you a very simple way to remedy that problem!
How to make a simple waste sorting system directly in the trash can!
DIY waste sorter – Housewife tips, waste sorting
You need
- Trash can
- Glue gun + hot melt glue
- Compostable corn bags with handles
- Two plastic lids
- Regular trash bags
Do this
1. Heat up the glue gun and glue one of the lids to the upper edge. See picture.
2. Hook on the first bag and measure where lid number two should sit (fairly exactly opposite, opposite side to the first).
3. Glue lid number two and then hook on the other bag.
4. Now you have a trash can with two bags in it. Two compartments. Sort compostable waste in the biodegradable green bag and plastic in the other.
Of course, you can use the same method with other bags for other sorting.
