Seat belts have a tendency to get dirty and even start to smell bad. This is because they sit tight against the body and are made of textile, lots of tightly woven threads where ice cream, soft drinks, coffee and sweat find their way in and take hold.

This is how to clean them most easily:

1. Pull out the entire belt and fasten with a bag clip. Now you can clean it in peace without risking the belt slipping in. Smart huh?! 😉

2. Dry the entire belt with a damp cloth and soap . This is usually enough. Remember to dry both sides of the belt and be a little extra careful in the middle, where the belt has the most contact with the body.

3. If the belt is dirty from sweat or cigarette smoke, it is more difficult then you may need to use soapy water and a soft brush and gently "scrub" the entire belt.

4. Wipe with a damp cloth.

5. Allow the belt to lie and dry in the extended bearing before carefully letting it roll back in. Do not let go so that the belt is rolled in violently as it may twist.

Remember not to do this when it is below freezing outside, then remaining water can freeze and follow it into the roller mechanism.

Watch the clip below and we'll show you how!

 Questions and Answers

- Why do seat belts tend to get dirty and smell bad?

Seat belts fit tightly against the body and are made of textile, which makes them susceptible to stains from ice cream, soda, coffee and sweat, which can cause bad odors.

- When is it particularly important to be careful when cleaning the seat belt?

It is especially important to be careful when cleaning the middle of the belt, where it has the most contact with the body and where stains and odors can collect.

- Why is it not appropriate to clean the seat belt when it is below freezing outside?

At freezing temperatures, residual water from cleaning can freeze and follow into the belt's roller mechanism, which can cause problems with the belt's function.
