Soap has been a household favorite for generations and is still one of the most reliable products when it comes to cleaning. But what makes soap so special, and how can we use it in the best way in our homes? Let’s dive into this natural cleaning star!

What is soap?

 

Soap is a biodegradable cleaning agent traditionally made from fat and an alkaline solution, also called lye. The most common varieties are based on either vegetable oils, such as linseed oil, or animal fats. Green soap, which was made from hemp oil, and animal-based soap that used to be boiled on farms and in soap-boiling facilities, became white/gray rather than the translucent yellow produced with vegetable oils. Västerbottenssåpa is made from rapeseed oil. 

Soap is not only gentle on the environment; it is also safe to use in homes with children and pets. Its natural composition makes it a sustainable alternative to many synthetic cleaning products.

 

How can soap be used?

 

Soap is extremely versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes:

  1. Floor cleaning: Mix a few drops of soap into a bucket of warm water to get clean, fresh-smelling floors. It works excellently on wood, tiles, and other materials.

  2. Stain removal: Apply concentrated soap directly to stains on clothes, furniture, or carpets. Rub it in, let it work, and then rinse.

  3. Oven cleaning: Coat the oven with concentrated soap, warm it slightly, and let it sit for a while. Then wipe it clean with a cloth and water.

  4. Gardening: Soap has traditionally also been used to combat aphids and other pests. Dilute soap with water and spray it on the plants.
    Today, the most popular use for soap is cleaning and treating decking.
