During the last weekend, we finally got the chance to scrub our rugs in the lovely spring weather. With an enamel bucket from Kockums and solid VästerbottensSåpa on the jetty, we used our ecological scrubbing brush to scrub our blue rag rugs.

Soap-scrubbing rugs
During the past weekend, the sun came out, and we quickly went out to the jetty to scrub the rugs. Lovely spring air and a fresh breeze, but warm water in the bucket made it a really pleasant time.
We chose to use the solid soap as it is practical to use with a regular panel scrubbing brush. A dollop of soap is much easier to distribute over a rug than the liquid soap, which is immediately absorbed into the material. With the solid variant, you can easily add the right amount of water and soap to get a moderately thick lather.
We scrubbed the rugs on both sides (as described above) with lukewarm water, brush, and solid VästerbottensSåpa, whereupon they were rinsed with water and hung to dry in the spring breeze. The result was clean rugs with a lovely juniper scent.

The rug in the picture is, coincidentally, woven by aunt Sonja Winther, whose mother was Fredrika Helmersson, great-grandmother with the original recipe for the soap. This is a small family saga signed by the Helmersson family that just continues, generation after generation.

Questions and Answers
- Why did we choose to use solid VästerbottensSåpa instead of liquid soap to scrub the rugs?
We chose the solid soap because it is easier to distribute evenly over the rug using a regular panel scrubbing brush. The liquid variant tends to be absorbed into the material immediately.
- How did we clean the rugs after using soap and scrubbing brush?
We scrubbed the rugs on both sides with lukewarm water and solid VästerbottensSåpa before rinsing them with clean water and hanging them to dry in the spring breeze.
- What is the story behind the rug used during cleaning?
The rug in the picture is woven by aunt Sonja Winther, whose mother was Fredrika Helmersson, who had the original recipe for the soap. It is part of the family's history that continues to be passed down through generations.
