Which cycle should you wash clothes on?
Sara IdenforsThe choice of wash program depends on the material and how dirty the clothes are. Here are some common wash programs and when you should use them. Note that you should always read and follow the care instructions on the garments:
1. Cotton program (Normal)
- When: For everyday cotton garments such as T-shirts, jeans, sheets, and towels.
- Temperature: 40–60°C, depending on the garments’ needs and level of soiling.
- Spin speed: High spin speed to remove as much water as possible.
2. Synthetics program
- When: For synthetic materials such as polyester, acrylic, or blended fibers.
- Temperature: 30–40°C.
- Spin speed: Lower spin speed than for cotton to prevent damage to the fibers.
3. Delicates/Silk program
- When: For delicate materials such as silk, lace, or garments with fine details.
- Temperature: 20–30°C.
- Spin speed: No spinning to protect the garments.
4. Wool program
- When: For wool garments or garments marked “hand wash”.
- Temperature: Cold or max. 30°C (depending on the garment label).
- Spin speed: Very low, but preferably no spinning to prevent the wool from shrinking or losing its shape. Dry flat.
5. Quick wash
- When: For lightly soiled clothes or when you are in a hurry.
- Temperature: Usually 30–40°C.
- Spin speed: Varies depending on the machine, but is usually faster.
6. Eco program
- When: To save energy and water, but it takes longer than the standard programs.
- Temperature: Usually 30–40°C, sometimes lower.
- Spin cycle: Standard speed.
7. Hand-wash program
- When: For extremely delicate clothes that you would otherwise hand-wash.
- Temperature: Max. 30°C.
- Spin cycle: Low or none.
8. Sportswear program
- When: For sportswear and performance fabrics that wick away moisture.
- Temperature: 30–40°C.
- Spin cycle: Medium to high.
General guidelines:
- Dark clothes: Wash at a lower temperature to preserve the color.
- White clothes: Wash at 60°C or higher to keep them fresh and remove stains.
