The grill grate is perhaps the most underrated part of the grill. It's where the flavors are created, but it's also where the stubborn dirt collects. In this blog, we take you through an eco-friendly method of cleaning your grill grate without having to rely on harsh chemicals!
In this blog we show you how to soap the grill grate - clean, step by step!
Here you will find the products we will use - Kitchen Cleaning Kit
First a little chemistry: To dissolve dirt that is biological, that is, from the plant or animal kingdom, you need something basic, such as a good soap . To dissolve dirt that is greasy, you need grease. Equal solves equal, we were taught in school and that's right! An over-greased soap is therefore absolutely perfect for getting the grill grate clean.
Here's how to do it:
1: Place the grill grate on a plastic base. Here we have used a plastic bag.
2. Use a heavy fat soap, liquid soap works well too, but we have used the more concentrated solid soap . To distribute the soap, we have used a sponge and warm water. This sponge is effective and good and it is based on cellulose instead of plastic.
Make sure the entire grate is covered with soap and water. The mixture/foam should preferably be thick, but it must not be dry. It should be thoroughly moistened.
3. Fold over the plastic and seal. We have used tape. But the main thing is that you find a way to keep the grate wet with soap and water and not dry out. Store like this overnight. It needs to rest at least 12 hours.
3. Open the package after 12 hours and test with an ecofibre cloth if the black, burnt residue comes off. Don't do it, let it rest for another 12 or 24 hours. Dry the grid with the ecofibre cloth, strand by strand, then rinse with lukewarm water. Wipe off and voila, the grill is clean!
Now we just have to wait for the barbecue season in 2023.

- Why is an over-greased soap effective for cleaning the grill grate?
An overfatted soap is effective because fat dissolves fat. It can break down and dissolve the burnt and stuck on grid.
- What is the purpose of sealing the grill grate with plastic and keeping it soaked with soap and water overnight?
The purpose is to let the soap work for a longer time to dissolve the ingrained dirt and the burnt on the grill.
- Why is it important to use lukewarm water to rinse off the grill after cleaning?
Warm water is gentler on metal and helps remove any soap residue without damaging the grill.
- What type of cloth should be used to wipe the grill after cleaning, and why is it suitable for the purpose?
An eco-fiber cloth is used to wipe the grill because it is effective at absorbing liquid and has a surface that is gentle on the metal of the grill.
