Do you need to buy a new grill grate every year?

The grill grate may be the most underrated part of the grill. It is where the flavors are created, but it is also where stubborn dirt accumulates. In this blog, we'll guide you through an environmentally friendly method for cleaning your grill grate without relying on harsh chemicals!

How do you clean a grill grate in an environmentally friendly way?

You can clean the grill grate effectively by using superfat soap, warm water, and a plastic covering that retains moisture. Leave it overnight, then wipe it clean with an ecofiber cloth—without harsh chemicals. Here you'll find the products we'll be using: Kitchen Cleaning Kit

Here's how to do it—step by step:

1. Soak the grate
Place the grill grate on a plastic bag or plastic sack and cover it with superfat soap and warm water. Use a sponge to distribute the soap evenly.

2. Cover the grate and let it rest
Fold the plastic over the grate and tape it in place so that it stays moist. Leave it to rest for at least 12 hours—preferably longer.

3. Wipe and rinse
After soaking, wipe the grate one bar at a time with an ecofiber cloth. Then rinse with lukewarm water and dry thoroughly.

Further down in the post, you'll find pictures and more detailed steps explaining what to do.

First, a little chemistry: To dissolve biological dirt—that is, dirt originating from plants or animals—you need something alkaline, such as a good soap. To dissolve greasy dirt, you need fat. Like dissolves like, as we learned in school, and it's absolutely true! A superfat soap is therefore perfect for getting the grill grate clean.

Here's how to do it—with pictures:

1: Place the grill grate on a plastic surface. Here, we used a plastic sack.

2. Use a good, superfat soap. Liquid soap works too, but we used the more concentrated bar soap. To spread the soap, we used a sponge and warm water. This sponge is effective and works well, and it is made from cellulose instead of plastic.

Make sure the entire grate is covered with soap and water. The mixture/foam may be thick, but it must not dry out. It should remain thoroughly moistened.

3. Fold the plastic over and seal it. We used tape, but the main thing is to find a way to keep the grate thoroughly moistened with soap and water so that it does not dry out. Store it this way overnight. It needs to sit for at least 12 hours.

3. Open the package after 12h and test with an ecofiber cloth to see whether the black, burnt residue comes off. If it does not, let it sit for another 12 or 24 hours. Wipe the grate with the ecofiber cloth, row by row, and then rinse with lukewarm water. Wipe it dry and voilà, the grate is clean!

Now all that remains is to wait for the 2023 grilling season.

Questions and answers

- Why is an overfatted soap effective for cleaning the grill grate?

- An overfatted soap is effective because fat dissolves fat. It can break down and dissolve burnt-on and stuck-on residue on the grate.

- What is the purpose of sealing the grill grate with plastic and keeping it thoroughly moistened with soap and water overnight?

The purpose is to let the soap work for a longer time to dissolve the ingrained dirt and burnt-on residue on the grate.

- Why is it important to use lukewarm water to rinse the grate after cleaning?

Lukewarm water is gentler on metal and helps remove any soap residue without damaging the grate.

- What type of cloth should be used to wipe the grate after cleaning, and why is it suitable for this purpose?

An ecofiber cloth is used to wipe the grate because it is effective at absorbing liquid and has a surface that is gentle on the metal of the grate.
