Vinegar: A versatile helper in your pantry

This post explores the versatile uses of vinegar and its role as an indispensable aid in the household. From being a powerful descaling and disinfectant to neutralizing bad odors, vinegar offers a range of benefits. We also discuss the importance of using vinegar responsibly and provide basic facts about its production and concentrations.

Vinegar not only has a place in the kitchen but has also proven to be an invaluable aid in the household. Its versatile uses range from cooking and preservation to cleaning and beauty routines. There are many home remedies and household tips. Vinegar has a very low pH value, i.e., it is acidic and so acidic that it usually needs to be diluted to be used for its intended purpose. Pure vinegar should absolutely not be consumed.

Vinegar is not just a culinary star – it also has impressive cleaning properties. Its acidity makes it a powerful descaling and disinfecting agent. Mix vinegar with water to create a natural cleaning solution that is effective on surfaces such as kitchen sinks, tiles and glass. In addition, it works as a fantastic agent for neutralizing bad odors in the home.

Although vinegar has a wealth of benefits, it is important to use it responsibly, especially when used in concentrations or on sensitive surfaces. Keep out of reach of children and animals and wear gloves if you handle high-concentration vinegar.

Whether used for preserving, enhancing flavors in the kitchen or disinfecting surfaces, vinegar is an indispensable secret that has stood the test of time and continues to be a reliable companion in the household.

Vinegar can replace many other chemical products. Not too long ago, the amount of products in Swedish households' cleaning cupboards was significantly lower. We didn't need that many different bottles to clean, and that's of course still the case. Vinegar can replace many other things, in fact, almost anything that requires a low pH, an acidic product. Limescale and rust are things that you need an acidic product to get rid of, and then vinegar is natural and simple. The vinegar you find with us is at 15%, a concentration that we, after many years of testing, have found to be optimal for cleaning. It does not need to be measured and calculated, but can be used directly.

Some basic facts about vinegar

Vinegar is a mixture of acetic acid and water 24%

Spirit vinegar - the same thing as vinegar but with a different concentration 12%

Vinegar is produced by allowing alcohol to oxidize so that acetic acid is formed. The ethanol disappears as the vinegar is formed. There may be traces of alcohol in vinegar, but no large amounts.

The use of vinegar in Sweden has been known since the 17th century.

Vinegar in Swedish was originally used as a term for all acetic acid solutions for food purposes, regardless of purity and origin.

What was originally called wine vinegar goes under the name wine vinegar, and the same applies to all flavored varieties of vinegar.

Vinegar of different concentrations

Vinegar sold in grocery stores, at least in Sweden, usually has a concentration of 12% or 24%.

  • Glacial acetic acid refers to pure 100% acetic acid, or acetic acid with a concentration of >90%. This has rarely been used for food purposes. The name comes from the fact that pure acetic acid has a relatively high freezing point and solidifies just below room temperature.
  • Acetic acid is the trivial name for pure ethanoic acid in chemical contexts. In food contexts, the term has also been somewhat improperly used to describe -strong vinegar.
  • Spirit vinegar usually refers to a 12% acetic acid solution. The suffix "spirit", the trivial name for ethanol, refers to the starting material for vinegar production, not that any ethanol is included in the spirit vinegar itself.
  • Pickling vinegar usually refers to a 6% acetic acid solution.
  • Table vinegar usually refers to a 3% acetic acid solution.

In Sweden, vinegar of different concentrations has traditionally been sold in bottles of different shapes. The stronger, so-called spirit vinegar, has been sold in square, relatively small bottles, while other vinegar has been sold in round bottles, usually containing 1 or 0.5 liters.

The different shape of the bottles helps to reduce the risk of confusion between vinegar of different concentrations.
