What are digital product passports, and why are they important?

As sustainability becomes increasingly important, the EU has initiated a new requirement for Digital Product Passports (DPP), which will help companies and organizations understand the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle. A digital product passport is like a digital “ID card” for a product. It contains information about everything from manufacturing and materials to transport and how the product should be recycled. The goal is to create a more circular economy, reduce environmental impact, and guide consumers to make more sustainable choices when purchasing products. Digital Product Passports will come into effect in the EU from 2026 and will initially cover specific product categories, such as batteries, electronics, and textiles, but the plan is to gradually expand to more industries.

At Västerbottenssåpa, we have taken significant steps to develop DPPs for our products. Some of our products already have a DPP, and we are actively working to develop more. However, it is a complex process that requires a lot of work and careful calculations.

Creating a Digital Product Passport Is Complex

Developing DPP is far from simple. It means that we must collect detailed information about every step in the product's lifecycle, from raw materials and production to transport and recycling. For us, this means that we not only have to understand our own processes, but also our suppliers' processes. The challenge lies in the fact that there is not yet a standardized approach to creating a DPP. Different industries have different requirements, and we must navigate a rapidly changing situation to find the best solution for our products.

LCA Analyses - an Important Foundation

When we develop new products, we always do an LCA analysis (Life Cycle Assessment). An LCA analyzes the product's environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. It gives us a deep understanding of which parts of the product's manufacturing and use affect the environment the most. This analysis is also key to creating our DPPs, as the information from the LCA analysis helps us to calculate the product's total impact. This includes:

  • The origin and impact of the material.

  • Energy consumption during manufacturing.

  • Emissions during transport.

  • How the product is used and recycled.

Why DPP Is Important for Consumers and the Environment

For you as a consumer, a digital product passport provides greater insight into what you are buying and how it affects the environment. You can make informed choices and support companies that actively work for sustainability. For us as manufacturers, DPP provides an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and create products that are even more environmentally friendly.

Summary

Digital Product Passports are the future's tools for creating transparency and sustainability throughout the product's lifecycle. We at Västerbottenssåpa are proud to have already developed DPP for some products, and we continue to work on this for our other products (you can find our product passports under the tab "product pass"). Although the process is complex and there are no standards, our goal is to always deliver products that are as environmentally friendly as possible. Our LCA analyses are an important part of this work and help us to identify potential for improvement.

Answer: A digital product passport is a document that contains information about a product's entire lifecycle - from raw material to recycling. It aims to create greater transparency and contribute to a circular economy.

  1. Why is it difficult to create a DPP?

Answer: There are many steps to map in a product's lifecycle, from manufacturing and transport to recycling. In addition, there are no standardized methods, which makes the process more complex.

  1. What is an LCA analysis?

Answer: An LCA analysis (Life Cycle Assessment) is a method for analyzing the environmental impact from a product throughout its lifecycle. It helps companies understand and reduce products' environmental impact.

  1. How does DPP contribute to a sustainable future?

Answer: DPP enables consumers and companies to make more informed decisions, reduce resource consumption, and promote recycling. It is an important tool for creating a circular and sustainable economy.
