Tough on grease. Gentle on hands and the environment.
Västerbottenssåpa’s fragrance-free dishwashing liquid effectively removes grease and dried-on food residue without filling the kitchen with strong fragrances. It contains no perfume, dyes, SLS, SLES, EDTA, or NTA—just ingredients with a clear purpose. The result is clean dishes and a thoughtfully formulated dishwashing liquid for those who want to avoid unnecessary chemicals in everyday life.
About the Product
We’ve all been there, washing dishes in apple-scented foam and thinking they must be clean. But foam doesn’t clean. And perfume has no place on a plate.
We wanted to create something so obvious that it almost feels strange it didn’t already exist. A dish soap that does its job without dyes, perfume, or SLES. Because color and bubbles fool the mind. They make us believe something is happening simply because we see foam and smell a fragrance, but in reality, they do nothing to make the dishes cleaner.
Our dish soap cleans, period. No strong scents, no unnecessary chemicals, no dish soap residue that affects your skin or the life in our lakes and oceans.
We removed everything that is actually NOT needed and kept what works. A dish soap that doesn’t try to seem better, but actually is.
✔️ Free from dyes, perfume, and SLES
SLES is used in most dish soaps to create foam. It makes the product look effective, but it is more illusion than function. The substance is also harsh on the skin and harmful to aquatic life, because it breaks down slowly and affects fish and other organisms even in small amounts. We left it out completely.
You may not notice that SLES is not in this dish soap, but nature will. We promise.
More than half a million people already clean with our products today. Together, we have made natural cleaning the new normal. So creating a dish soap like this wasn’t a choice; it was the obvious thing to do.
Usage
The dish soap works equally well for glasses, porcelain, and cutlery.
Apply a little dish soap directly to the brush, sponge, or sink, just as you usually do. Wash the dishes as normal and rinse with clean water. Let the dishes air-dry in a rack or dry them with a dish towel.
For really ingrained grease or burnt-on surfaces, we recommend our kitchen soap, which is extra effective against stubborn dirt.
You’ll notice that it foams less than ordinary dish soap. That’s intentional. Foam doesn’t clean the dishes; it’s just air. The dish soap cleans effectively even in cold water and leaves no residue.

We make soft soap from recycled frying oil at our factory in Vilhelmina.
It has always been important to us to make real soap, without adding unnecessary chemicals, and to deliver nothing but PURE soap.
The history of Västerbottenssåpa began in the 1920s, when great-grandmother Fredrika made her own fine soap at home on the farm in Hornsjö, Vilhelmina.
Three generations later, Fredrika’s legacy of living sustainably and frugally, and reusing materials, lives on in the family—albeit in a modern version adapted to the times we live in today.
Our soap, based on Fredrika’s recipe, has been given packaging, a label, and a name—Västerbottenssåpa.
Instead of the sheep fat Fredrika used, Västerbottenssåpa is now made from used cooking oil collected from selected local restaurants. It is mostly rapeseed oil or a corn and rapeseed oil blend—but NEVER palm oil or animal fat.
The oil, which is purified and saponified, then forms the basis of all our soap-based cleaning products.

Let us tell you how it all fits together
Because the soap is made from recycled raw materials—that is, it is circular—the product’s CO2 emissions are very low. One bottle of soap, including production, packaging, and transportation, has CO2 emissions of approximately 237 g. This can be compared with the emissions from producing 1 kg of palm oil, which are approximately 10 kg.
-
Canola oil is produced as a food product
-
Rapeseed oil is used by restaurants throughout the country.
-
Västerbottenssåpa sources the oil that is purified at the small factory in Vilhelmina. It is then saponified into soft soap.
-
The soap will be mailed to you.
Frequently asked questions & answers
How should I sort a dish brush for recycling?
Biocomposite can be sorted as residual waste or combustible waste. The material is made from renewable raw materials and has a significantly lower carbon footprint than fossil-based plastic.
Can I boil the dish brush to clean it?
We recommend washing it in the dishwasher instead. Boiling it in water for a long time may affect the material.
Can I put the dish brush in the dishwasher?
Yes, the brush is dishwasher-safe. It’s a good way to keep it fresh and hygienic.
Is the dish brush completely plastic-free?
The brush is made of biocomposite consisting of up to 98% renewable raw materials. It is not traditional plastic, but a material made from wood fibers and biomaterials that looks and functions like plastic while being much more environmentally friendly.
Is fragrance-free dish soap just as effective?
Yes. Fragrance does not affect the dish soap’s cleaning ability. It is the surfactants that dissolve grease and dirt, not the scent. Västerbottenssåpa’s fragrance-free dish soap cleans effectively without added fragrance or dyes.
How do you choose a good dishwashing detergent?
A good dishwashing liquid should get the dishes thoroughly clean without containing more than necessary. Look for a dishwashing liquid that effectively dissolves grease and dried-on food residue, is concentrated, and contains as few unnecessary additives as possible.
VästerbottensSåpa’s dishwashing liquid was developed with precisely that philosophy. It is fragrance-free and contains neither SLS, SLES, EDTA, NTA nor colorants. At the same time, it effectively dissolves grease and dried-on food residue, making it a good choice for anyone who wants a thoughtfully formulated dishwashing liquid for everyday hand washing.
Which dish soap is best?
The best dishwashing detergent is one that effectively removes grease and dried-on food residue while containing as few unnecessary additives as possible. If you want a fragrance-free dishwashing detergent without SLS, SLES, EDTA, NTA, or colorants, Västerbottenssåpa’s dishwashing detergent is a good option. It cleans effectively and is developed for everyday hand washing.
How much dish soap should you use?
Usually, a few drops of dishwashing liquid in the dishwater or directly on the dish sponge are enough. An effective, concentrated dishwashing liquid, such as Västerbottenssåpas, goes a long way, so a small amount is sufficient.
Which dish soap is best for sensitive skin?
If you have sensitive skin, a fragrance-free dish soap without unnecessary additives can be a good choice. Västerbottenssåpa dish soap contains no fragrance, dyes, SLS, or SLES and is developed to clean effectively with carefully selected ingredients.
How do you remove grease from pots and pans?
Use warm water together with an effective dishwashing detergent. If necessary, let the dishes soak for a few minutes before washing them. A dishwashing detergent like VästerbottensSåpa effectively dissolves grease and dried-on food residues, making the dishes easier to clean.
What should a good dish soap contain?
A good dishwashing liquid should effectively dissolve grease and food residue while containing functional ingredients. Today, many people choose dishwashing liquids without unnecessary additives such as fragrance, colorants, SLS, SLES, EDTA, and NTA. Västerbottenssåpa’s dishwashing liquid was developed with precisely this in mind.
Why do some dish soaps produce less foam?
More foam does not mean better cleaning. This is a common misconception. It is the surfactants in dish soap that dissolve grease and dirt, not the amount of foam. Therefore, a dish soap that produces less foam can still clean very effectively, just like Västerbottenssåpa dish soap.
