Washing instructions and dosage
Washing instructions and dosing
The amount of laundry detergent needed depends on the hardness of the water, the amount of laundry and how dirty the laundry is. Most households in Sweden have soft water, but if you are unsure, you can check with your local authority. Less detergent is needed when using soft water. The cap on the bottle holds 40 ml.
As a guideline, you can use the following:
-
35 ml for 4–5 kg of laundry in soft water, 55 ml for more than 6 kg
-
40 ml for 4–5 kg of laundry in medium-hard water, 65 ml for more than 6 kg
-
50 ml for 4–5 kg of laundry in hard water, 75 ml for more than 6 kg
Always follow the garment’s washing instructions. Washing correctly helps garments last longer and protects the environment. Do not wash unnecessarily—wash only when the garment really needs it. Always pre-treat stains, including greasy stains and stains from people, animals or nature, with soap.
For machine washing, pour the detergent into the detergent drawer or use a dosing ball directly in the drum. For hand washing, use 10–15 ml of detergent per 10 litres of water. Wear gloves, as prolonged contact with water can irritate the skin.
Wash at temperatures between 30°C and 95°C, but use common sense and always follow the garment’s washing instructions. Sort the laundry by colour. Heavily soiled, dirty or contaminated workwear should be washed at higher temperatures, while lightly soiled delicate garments with prints or details should be turned inside out and washed at lower temperatures.
Synthetic garments, such as fleece, should be washed in a laundry bag to collect microplastics. Low temperatures save energy and extend the garments’ lifespan, but bear in mind that very dirty garments may not get clean at 30°C. Underwear should be washed at a minimum of 40°C, but always follow the washing instructions.

What sets Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent apart from “regular” detergents bought at the grocery store?
Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose cleaner uses new technology without bleach, enzymes, or SLES (Sodium laurate ethoxylated sulfates). This means we use fewer substances without compromising effectiveness. It’s good for the environment, the climate, and you!
That’s how we created a detergent without harmful chemicals.
That’s how we created a detergent without harmful chemicals.
For over a year and a half, we worked to create an eco-friendly laundry detergent completely free of hazard symbols. By using polycarboxylates from Finnish trees, we effectively remove dirt without any harmful chemicals.
We deliberately chose to leave out bleach to protect your clothes and the environment—if you want a bleaching effect, you can easily add natural baking soda.
The result? A gentle all-in-one laundry detergent for both whites and colors. It is so gentle that it carries no hazard symbols at all.

Frequently asked questions & answers
What does baking soda dissolve?
Baking soda dissolves organic dirt, odors, and light grease. It works especially well on stains from food, drinks, and sweat. More stubborn grease stains are cleaned more effectively with soap.
Can you use baking soda against powdery mildew?
Baking soda mixed with water works as a natural remedy for powdery mildew on plants. Spray it on the leaves and let it dry. The high pH makes it difficult for the fungus to grow.
Does baking soda work for cleaning the microwave?
Yes, mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste and rub it into the inside of the microwave. Let it sit for ten minutes, then wipe it off. Burnt-on food and grease stains come off easily.
Can baking soda bleach clothes?
Bicarbonate of soda has a mild bleaching effect and can help freshen up white laundry. However, it is much gentler than chlorine bleach and normally does not damage colored fabrics. Always test it on a small area first if you are unsure.
How do you use baking soda in the laundry?
Add one tablespoon of baking soda directly to the washing machine along with your regular detergent. It helps neutralize odors and lift stains. Baking soda works as a natural supplement and makes laundry fresher.
How strong is the lavender scent?
The scent is mild and natural, not perfumed in the same way as regular laundry detergents. It is faintly noticeable on clean clothes and does not disappear after a short time. Lavender also has a calming effect.
Can I wash workout clothes with all-purpose detergent?
Absolutely. The detergent is effective against sweat and odors in synthetic fabrics. Wash workout clothes at 40 degrees for the best results.
How much detergent should I use?
Use approximately 35 ml for a normally full load. The bottle has a measuring guide in the cap, making it easy to measure the right amount. With hard water, you may need a little more.
Is the detergent gentle enough for sensitive skin?
Yes, the sensitive version is fragrance-free and free from enzymes, SLES, and bleach. It is one of the mildest laundry detergents you can find and is suitable for allergy sufferers and children.
Can I use the stain remover on all materials?
It is gentle enough for most fabrics. Always test it on an inconspicuous area of the garment first if it is a delicate material such as silk or velvet.
Does it work on beetroot stains?
Yes, treat the stain as soon as possible. Wet the garment, apply the soap, and brush gently. Beetroot stains can be stubborn, so feel free to repeat the treatment before washing.
How do I remove saffron stains?
Dab the stain and apply the stain remover directly to it. Leave it for a few minutes, then gently brush with a soft laundry brush before washing as usual.
What types of stains does the stain remover work on?
It is designed for greasy and biological stains such as food, grass, blood, and sweat. It also works well on fruit stains, tomato stains, and other plant-based stains.
Does the all-purpose detergent contain bleach?
No, our all-purpose detergent contains no bleach or perborates. If you want to whiten white laundry, you can add baking soda to the wash. It provides a natural whitening effect without harsh chemicals.
Do I still need to separate white and dark laundry?
Yes, always separate white, dark, and colored laundry. The detergent works for all types, but the colors can bleed onto each other in the machine.
Can I use soap flakes instead of regular laundry detergent?
Absolutely. Our all-purpose laundry detergent is soap-based and works as a complete laundry detergent. It replaces both detergent for whites and detergent for colors in a single bottle.
Does bleach clean clothes?
No, the detergent contains no bleach. It preserves the colors of your clothes and works equally well for black, dark, and light garments. Perfect if you want to wash everything in the same machine without sorting.
Can you wash silk with this detergent?
Yes, the detergent is gentle enough for silk. Hand-washing in lukewarm water works best. Avoid wringing out the garment; instead, let it dry flat.
Can I wash wool and wool garments with this detergent?
Yes, our all-purpose detergent works excellently for wool and woolen garments. The soap is superfat and gentle, which protects wool fibers from shrinking or felting. We recommend washing on the wool cycle at 30 degrees.
What is the difference between detergent for white laundry and detergent for colored laundry?
White laundry detergents often contain optical brighteners and bleach that can damage colored clothes. Color detergents contain no bleach but are sometimes less effective on stains. Our all-purpose detergent handles both types without compromise.
Does the detergent contain bleach or surfactants?
No, the detergent contains neither bleach nor synthetic surfactants. Instead, it cleans with natural soap. White clothes get clean without risking the colors of colored garments fading.
Does the detergent contain enzymes?
No, our all-purpose laundry detergent is completely enzyme-free. Instead, it is based on an extra-gentle soap that removes dirt without synthetic additives. This makes it especially gentle on sensitive skin and a good choice if you want to avoid unnecessary chemicals in your laundry.
How much detergent is actually needed to get laundry clean?
For a standard-sized machine with soft water and lightly soiled laundry, approximately 35 ml of all-purpose detergent is needed. You can increase the dose as needed, but be careful not to use too much.
These factors affect how much all-purpose detergent you need:
- Water hardness: Hard water requires a higher dose of detergent, while most Swedish households have soft water and can manage with a lower dose.
- Amount of laundry: A full load requires more than a half-full load.
- Degree of soiling: Heavily soiled laundry may require a slightly higher dose.
- Machine size: If you have an extra-large washing machine, you may need to adjust the amount of all-purpose detergent accordingly.
How much detergent is needed for hand washing?
For hand washing, use approximately 10–15 ml of all-purpose detergent per basin containing 10 liters of water.
Adjust the dosage according to the level of soiling
If the clothes are heavily soiled, you can slightly increase the amount of all-purpose detergent to ensure a clean result. Remember to dissolve the detergent thoroughly in the water before adding the garments to achieve the best results when hand washing.
What are the dosing guidelines for a full and a half-full machine?
The dosage indicated on the bottle for our all-purpose detergent is intended for a full load. If you wash a half-full load, you should reduce the amount of detergent to avoid overdosing.
Is Västerbottenssåpa All-Purpose Cleaner environmentally friendly?
Yes, Västerbottenssåpa All-Purpose Cleaner is a very environmentally friendly choice. It is made from natural ingredients and is fully biodegradable, meaning that it does not leave any harmful substances behind in nature.
Environmental benefits of Västerbottenssåpa All-Purpose Cleaner:
- Natural ingredients: Free from unnecessary chemicals, bleach, and optical brighteners.
- Biodegradable: Gentle on both our waterways and ecosystems.
How can I reduce my use of laundry detergent to be more environmentally friendly?
The most effective way to reduce detergent use is to wash less often. Instead, air out your clothes if they only need to be freshened up.
Effective tips for more environmentally friendly laundry:
- Pre-treat stains locally: Instead of washing the entire garment with a high dose of detergent, you can pre-treat stains with a small amount of concentrated all-purpose detergent or a stain remover. This allows the rest of the load to be washed with a lower dosage.
- Only wash full loads: Always adjust the amount of all-purpose detergent according to the size of the machine and how dirty the laundry actually is.
- Use the right washing temperature: Do not lower the temperature too much if the clothes are dirty, as the detergent will then work less effectively and you may have to wash the garments again.
Do you need to use fabric softener with Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent?
No, you don’t need to use fabric softener with Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent. Our unique formula, based on natural soap, softens the fibers in your clothes during washing.
Why you can skip the fabric softener
Because our all-purpose detergent naturally replenishes oils and softens the fibers in your clothes, extra fabric softener isn’t necessary to achieve a soft feel. By leaving out fabric softener, you help protect the environment and reduce the risk of chemicals remaining in the fabric, while still achieving perfect washing results.
Is Västerbottenssåpa's all-purpose cleaner fragrance-free?
Yes, we offer an unscented version of our all-purpose detergent that is completely fragrance-free.
For those who prefer fragrance, we also offer all-purpose detergent scented with apple, citrus, or lavender.
Is Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose cleaner hypoallergenic?
Yes, our fragrance-free all-purpose detergent is an excellent choice for allergy sufferers and people with sensitive skin. By choosing the fragrance-free option, you completely avoid added fragrances and essential oils that could otherwise irritate the skin.
Can Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent be used for baby clothes?
Yes, our all-purpose detergent is perfectly suitable for baby clothes. However, we recommend choosing the unscented version, as babies have extra-sensitive skin and should not be exposed to unnecessary fragrances.
Why the all-purpose detergent is a good choice for your baby’s clothes:
- Completely natural: Our all-purpose detergent contains no bleach or optical brighteners that could irritate the skin.
- Unscented option: By choosing our fragrance-free version, you reduce the risk of allergic reactions in your child.
- Softening properties: The soap in the detergent naturally softens the fabric fibers, so you do not need to use a separate fabric softener.
Can Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent be used for white, black, and colored laundry?
Yes, our all-purpose detergent is perfectly suitable for white, black, and colored laundry.
Since our all-purpose detergent contains neither bleach nor optical brighteners, it is especially gentle on your clothes. It helps preserve the vibrancy of colors in both dark and colored laundry, so your garments do not fade unnecessarily.
Does the all-purpose detergent work on different materials such as wool, silk, and sportswear?
Yes, our all-purpose detergent works excellently on most materials, including wool, silk, and sportswear. Since the detergent is made from natural soap and contains no enzymes, it is especially gentle on delicate natural fabrics.
Does the all-purpose detergent remove musty odors from polyester and sportswear?
Yes, our all-purpose detergent is highly effective at removing musty odors from both polyester and other types of sportswear.
Remember to always follow the garment’s specific care instructions and avoid leaving damp sportswear in your gym bag for too long, as this promotes bacterial growth and musty odors.
How does washing Gore-Tex hunting clothes with your all-purpose detergent work?
Gore-Tex and other hunting clothes can be washed with Västerbottenssåpa’s all-purpose detergent. Since the detergent is based on natural soap and contains no enzymes, it cleans without clogging the technical membranes in performance clothing.
What are the most common ingredients in laundry detergent, and how do they affect my clothes and skin?
Conventional laundry detergents often contain surfactants, bleaching agents, and fragrances. These substances help clean your laundry but can also wear down both textile fibers and sensitive skin.
How the different ingredients affect your laundry:
- Surfactants: Reduce the surface tension of water so that dirt can dissolve. Because surfactants affect the aquatic environment, it is important to follow the dosing instructions and have an approved drainage system.
- Bleaching agents: Break down stains but also bleach the fabric’s own colors, which puts strain on the textiles and causes them to wear out faster.
- Optical brighteners: Particles that settle like a film on the outside of the fibers. They create the illusion that the garment is whiter than it really is, but may irritate the skin.
Our all-purpose laundry detergent is made with natural soap and contains neither bleaching agents nor optical brighteners. It cleans your clothes without adding unnecessary chemicals, helping preserve the fibers and being gentle on the skin.
How do different wash cycles and temperatures affect the effectiveness of laundry detergent?
Washing efficiency is determined by the balance between four factors: temperature, time, mechanical action, and detergent. If you lower the temperature, you need to compensate by increasing one of the other factors, for example by running the program for longer.
The four pillars of clean laundry:
- Temperature: Heat helps dissolve grease and stains. A 30°C program is colder than your body temperature, which can make it difficult to remove certain types of dirt.
- Time: The longer the detergent is allowed to work together with the water, the more time the dirt has to dissolve.
- Mechanical cleaning: This refers to the washing machine drum’s movements, which physically work the stains out of the fabric.
- Detergent: The chemical component that encapsulates the dirt and carries it away with the rinse water.
Choosing the right washing temperature
Lowering the temperature saves energy, but it is not a real saving if the clothes do not become clean. If stains remain because the heat is too low, the risk increases that the garments will wear out prematurely or need to be replaced. Therefore, adjust the temperature according to how dirty the laundry is to ensure that the detergent can do its job.
How does hard or soft water affect the effectiveness of laundry detergent?
Water hardness determines how much all-purpose detergent is needed to get the laundry clean. Hard and moderately hard water require a higher dosage, while soft water requires less detergent.
Water hardness is measured in °dH
Water hardness is measured in German degrees of hardness (°dH) and is based on the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water. The higher the value, the more all-purpose detergent is needed to neutralize the minerals and allow the detergent to work effectively on dirt.
Water hardness scale:
- 0–2 °dH: Very soft
- 2–5 °dH: Soft (most common in Sweden)
- 5–10 °dH: Moderately hard
- 10–21 °dH: Hard
- Over 21 °dH: Very hard
Adjust the all-purpose detergent dosage
Since most households in Sweden have soft water, you can often use the lower recommended dosage of all-purpose detergent. If you live in an area with hard water, some of the detergent’s active ingredients bind to the minerals in the water, so you need to increase the amount to maintain the washing performance and get your clothes clean.
What should I do if I spill laundry detergent directly on my clothes or on the floor?
If you spill multipurpose detergent, you should wipe it up and wash the surface immediately. Since detergent is concentrated, it is important to deal with the spill quickly to avoid stains or a slipping hazard
