We spend a large part of our lives in bed, so it's important that the bedroom is clean and fresh—and the bed too!

We want to start this post by pointing out that if you suspect you have a dust mite allergy, you should see a doctor for diagnosis. A dust mite allergy cannot be completely cleaned away. However, there are mite-proof bedding products for allergy sufferers, so find out if you're allergic if you suspect it.
Of course, sneezing can have other causes—and in that case, cleaning is not a bad idea at all!

Here are some tips for cleaning the bedroom and a practical step-by-step list in 8 easy points.

  • Remove bedding and wash at a minimum of 60°C. Do not buy bedding that cannot withstand washing at at least 60°C. Pillows and duvets should also be washable at 60°C. When it comes to beds, ventilation is key—spring mattresses with a wooden frame and a spiral core are great, while foam mattresses should be placed on bases that allow air flow, like slatted bases. Dust mites thrive in damp mattresses. Freezing – It's very difficult to kill mites by freezing, but if you can store, for example, duvets and pillows at below -18°C for at least 48 hours, it can be effective. Tumble dryers – There is no evidence that tumble drying kills mites, as it doesn’t get hot enough.
  • Remove clutter, old newspapers, and other dust collectors. Sort and discard.
  • Dust and air the room thoroughly. Make sure the room is well ventilated—poor ventilation keeps moisture in the room and in the bed.
  • Vacuum thoroughly, including inside the bed frame where dust can accumulate.

  • Wipe the floor.
  • Now take care of the mattress topper. If you can take it outside to air and beat it—that’s great! You can also take the opportunity to remove any stains. Remember that the mattress must be completely dry before placing it back on the bed. If you can't take it outside, we recommend the Bicarbonate trick.

* Sprinkle a thin layer of bicarbonate over the mattress.

* Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
* Vacuum up the bicarbonate.

  • Stains: Mix equal parts water, salt, and bicarbonate. Work on the stain gently with a soft cloth or sponge. You may need to repeat a few times. Remember to press a dry cloth or paper towel onto the stain to absorb as much water as possible. For greasy stains like formula—use soap and follow the same steps.
  • Put on fresh sheets. This should be done at least every 14 days. Not making the bed has long been suggested as a way to reduce mites. It's somewhat true—don't make the bed immediately after getting up. Let it air and dry out before making it. BUT feel free to make your bed as long as it’s not retaining moisture.

  • Bonus tip. If you’ve somehow gotten bad odors in your bedroom that have stuck to, for example, wallpaper and walls, place a small bowl of vinegar in the room. The vinegar will “eat up” the bad smell within a day or two.
