There are so many benefits and important aspects of bees that it is difficult to summarize in a short text. But one thing is certain, without bees as pollinators we would miss out on many foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
When bees collect pollen and nectar to make honey, they also pollinate the flowers they visit. Pollination is essential for seeds, fruits and vegetables to form. Bees have stomachs full of beneficial lactic acid bacteria that can fight bacterial infections in both bees and humans. Among other things, a collaboration between researchers at Lund University, SLU and KI has shown results that may be a step in combating the problems of both bee deaths and antibiotic resistance.
These were some of the reasons why I took a beekeeping course a few years ago and got my own bees, Nordic bees. It is tough to overwinter bees in Vilhelmina, we hold (an unofficial) cold record of -53*C but the effort is worth it considering the important work bees do.

So when it now also turns out that beeswax can replace plastic in several cases, it feels a little better. It is difficult to avoid all plastic, but you can do the best you can and you can reduce plastic on and around our food with the help of beeswax wraps and beeswax bags. In our refrigerator, the cheese is covered with beeswax wrap and sandwiches to be packed with lunch, we put in beeswax bags. Practical, actually much easier than fiddling with plastic wrap and so much better. Just place the beeswax wrap over the cheese, fold and heat/press gently for a couple of seconds and the beeswax wrap seals tightly around the food.
I clean my beeswax wraps with a little kitchen soap (unscented of course) and rinse with lukewarm water. When they get a little worn and wrinkled, I put them on a baking sheet in the oven briefly and they become like new.
A tip on the way to an everyday life with less plastic and so we help a beekeeper with his business which is clearly quite important for this planet.
