Here we take a different route to caring for wooden planks - by soap scrubbing! It's a method that may not be as common as oiling, but it offers unique benefits and a special aesthetic for your trolley. By using soap instead of oil, you give the trolley a soft and natural feel without giving it a glossy surface.
Can you soap scrub pressure-impregnated wooden planks... or planks without impregnation for that matter?
- Well then! It's completely true, you can actually choose to soap the wooden plank instead of oiling it. (It's a bit like scrubbing a wooden floor indoors.)
The difference between soap and oil is that the wooden trolley will not get an oily and shiny surface with the soap, but instead it will get a soft, warm feeling. The pressure impregnation in the wood is sufficient as a basic protection, the strength is not improved by oiling or soaping. Surface treatment is done to avoid small cracks, to get a pleasant and beautiful surface and if you choose to soap, you avoid the problem of the trolley attracting pollen and other dirt as the surface becomes velvety and easy to clean.
Here's how to do it:
1. Start by sweeping clean!
An old-fashioned broom or broom works well. You want to sweep off anything loose on the surface.
2. Scrub brushes and soap are what you need next.
- Choose a coarse brush if the trolley is heavily soiled.
- A Levang is a brush designed to be mounted on a shaft. It is good to have if you have a large balcony / deck.
- The soap must be of an overgreased model to create that protective surface and give that velvety feel that an old shed floor has.
– Scrub with warm/lukewarm water and soap to clean.
3. Work extra on areas stained or attacked by algae, lichens or moss.

4. Rinse or wipe off!
If necessary. If you see that the surface is full of things that have been scraped off the surface of the wood, you need to remove this before going to the next step.
5. Surface treatment.
Dry the floor with cold water and plenty of soap (soap with excess fat) There should be soap left, the fat in the soap should soak into the wood. 1l soap + 9l water in a bucket is usually enough.
Wipe the entire surface with a lot of soap in the cloth so that it is absorbed into the wood. When the wood has dried, you will notice if it wants more soap, if it wants to absorb more of the fat in the soap. If so, repeat step 6. Old, dry and porous surfaces need more soap than new hardwoods.
Before and after
The wood has been given a soft and "warm" surface. It will not attract pollen and other dirt the way an oiled trolley does.
– For more surface area, wipe several times with cold water and soap.
The next day, the wooden trolley has been allowed to dry overnight.
This image comes from a customer. The fact that the light is not the same in the pictures is due to the after picture being taken the next day when the trolley has dried after it has been soaped.
Note! Never use the pressure washer directly on the wooden pallet it can damage the planks!

- How does soap scrubbing differ from traditional oiling when it comes to caring for wooden planks?
Unlike oil, which can give a glossy finish, soap scrubbing gives a softer and more natural feel. In addition, the soap acts as a protection without negatively affecting the strength of the wooden pallet.
- What steps are included in the process of soap scrubbing wooden pallets?
The process involves cleaning the trolley, using scrub brushes and degreased soap, focusing on stained or infested areas, rinsing or wiping as needed, and finishing with treating the wood with soap and water to give a soft and easy-to-clean surface.
- What are the advantages of using overfatted soap to soap up wooden pallets?
Excess soap not only provides a protective layer, but also gives the wooden trolley a soft and warm feeling. In addition, it helps prevent the wooden trolley from attracting pollen and dirt, making it easier to maintain over time.
